Issue #1 · Wed, Oct 28, 2026

Welcome to the first Deadline Sweep, Illinois Towns Edition. Every week we go through Grants.gov, the Illinois Catalog of State Financial Assistance (CSFA), IDNR, the State Fire Marshal and USDA Rural Development, and keep only what a small Illinois municipality, township or fire district can actually apply for.

Every link below was checked when this issue was built. Award amounts, matches and eligibility come from the official notice. Read the NOFO before you apply, because the agency's wording is what counts.

In this issue: Closing soon (4) · New this week (2) · Worth planning for (7), 13 grants in all.

Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA)

  • Amount: Up to $35K per award; $600K total program

Community Facilities Direct Loan & Grant Program

USDA Rural Development (Illinois State Office)

  • Match: Grant share capped at 75% of project cost, so a local share of at least 25% is required; loans can cover the rest

  • Why it fits a small Illinois town: This is the standby for rural fire halls, village halls, fire trucks and clinics in towns of 20,000 or fewer, and you can apply any time.

Community Development Block Grant Community Revitalization Program

Illinois Dept. of Commerce & Economic Opportunity (DCEO)

  • Amount: Up to $1M for sidewalks, public building rehab, historic preservation or reuse of a closed building; demolition $250K to $2M depending on size; $13M total program

  • Who's eligible: Cities, villages, townships and counties that don't get their own HUD CDBG entitlement money (demolition excepted). You must be GATA-prequalified.

  • Match: Not required. Committing other money earns bonus points (up to 5 points if you cover 80% or more of project cost).

  • Why it fits a small Illinois town: Small towns outside the HUD entitlement areas can use federal CDBG money for sidewalks, streetscapes, downtown buildings and demolition. Apply early, because it's first-come, first-served.
